Different standards evaluate different aspects of drinking water treatment systems. Here’s what NSF/ANSI 42, 58 and 372 are designed to address.
TASTE & ODOR
Covers aesthetic effects such as chlorine taste and odor reduction.
RO PERFORMANCE
Evaluates reverse osmosis systems, including applicable performance requirements.
LEAD CONTENT
Addresses lead-content requirements for drinking water system components.
REVERSE OSMOSIS DRINKING WATER TREATMENT SYSTEMS
NSF/ANSI 58 establishes requirements for reverse osmosis drinking water treatment systems, covering system performance, materials, structural integrity and verified reduction claims.
Evaluates materials that come into contact with drinking water.
Evaluates whether the system can withstand specified operating conditions.
Evaluates the system’s ability to reduce total dissolved solids.
Evaluates purified-water production and water-use performance.
WHAT CAN BE TESTED?
NSF/ANSI 58 includes a required TDS reduction claim and allows additional contaminant reduction claims to be verified when applicable.
AESTHETIC EFFECTS TASTE, ODOR & CHLORINE
NSF/ANSI 42 addresses aesthetic effects in drinking water, focusing on characteristics that may affect taste, odor and appearance.
Can include claims related to chlorine taste and odor reduction.
Evaluates improvements to aesthetic characteristics of drinking water.
May include particulate reduction claims when specifically tested.
BETTER-TASTING, BETTER-SMELLING WATER
LEAD CONTENT DRINKING WATER SYSTEM COMPONENTS
NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 addresses lead-content requirements for products and components that come into contact with drinking water.
MATERIAL LEAD CONTENT
The standard evaluates the lead content of applicable drinking-water contact materials and components.
LEAD REDUCTION
NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 does not evaluate a filter’s ability to remove lead already present in drinking water.
Applies to relevant materials and components that may come into contact with drinking water.
Evaluates compliance with applicable limits for lead content in drinking-water system components.
Can apply to parts such as fittings, faucets, housings and other applicable water-contact components.
